Prepare caregivers to support older adults before, during, and after emergencies without exceeding the care plan or their training. This course covers personalized planning, support networks, evacuation and shelter decisions, power outages, essential supplies, communication, and continuity of home-care services.
What you will learn
- Review an older adult’s emergency plan, contacts, communication needs, and evacuation supports
- Identify medication, mobility, sensory, oxygen, refrigeration, and power-dependent equipment risks
- Recognize when to call 911, evacuate, shelter in place, or contact Olivia’s on-call supervisor
- Support dignity, choice, and accessible communication under stressful conditions
- Document emergency actions, service interruptions, participant status, and follow-up objectively
- Prepare for caregiver absence and continuity-of-care disruptions
Preparedness foundation
The Pennsylvania Department of Aging advises older adults to assess personal needs, create a plan, build a support network, prepare medications and medical supplies, and keep emergency documents accessible. FEMA provides caregiver-specific planning guidance, and CDC emphasizes at least a week of disability-related supplies and special planning for power-dependent needs.

Complete every required lesson and pass the final knowledge check with at least 80% to qualify for the course-specific completion certificate. Online completion does not replace Olivia’s current emergency policies, the participant’s individualized plan, emergency-services instructions, clinical guidance, or required hands-on drills.
